I had great plans to have a regular newsletter and a regular blog about our business over this first year after the grand opening last March. Best laid plans and all of that and here we are one year later and we’re still here! That’s an accomplishment. We have so sadly seen many of our confreres in the retail world move on to other things this past year because of the pandemic. It has seen the demise of some, been a boon to some others and has presented challenges to all.
It has definitely challenged us!! From that grand day in March 2020 when the Town Crier declared us open and the Mayor of Kentville cut the ribbon, it has been one rollercoaster ride. The Grand Opening weekend was indeed just that – Grand!! In so many ways. From the evening we hosted for special guests to the big day with so many wonderful customers, the crowds, yes crowds, in the store; the cookies bought, consumed and enjoyed; the joyful potential of this venture; it was all amazing!! And then quickly followed by the disappointment, sense of loss and downright fear that the pandemic served up.
And the pivot. How do we keep going? The staff was laid off. The doors were locked. The ingredients needed to be used up. Food businesses could continue to operate. That was a plus. So we baked. Just the two of us. We went live on Facebook with our product. And you shopped. We delivered curbside. We opened tentatively for a few hours a week. We let in one customer at a time. And we kept the lights on. People rallied. The landlord, the suppliers, the customers, the family. Everyone made an effort to keep us here.
One year on. We’re still here. We’ve made it through ups and downs, changes in the rules, shortages of everything from paper towels to flour. We’ve baked and baked. And decorated thousands upon thousands of cookies. We thought about surviving day to day, week to week and season to season. We made it to Christmas. That was a huge goal. And you came through. You shopped. You bought so many cookies. It meant January could happen. And you came through again at Valentines Day. It meant March could happen. But now we need you again
If you like our shop. We need you.
If you like our cookies. We need you.
If you think we’re a positive part of the Kentville retail landscape. We need you.
If you think we have a good product to offer. We need you.
If you’d like to help us keep people employed. We need you.
If you’d like us to be able to earn a living. We need you.
You Can Help
Lots of small businesses are posting ways that people can help without spending any money. Like our posts. Share our posts. Tell a friend. These are great ways to help promote us and please keep doing all those things (especially sharing on Facebook and saving on Instagram). And, we need you to Buy. Our. Shortbread. Spreading the word really helps. Saves and shares let more people see us. Shopping, though, that pays wages and buys supplies and pays the rent.
We need you to shop. Now more than ever. It’s been a year. We’re tired (and we know you’re tired too). So please, think of us for that teacher gift, appreciation gift, birthday treat, dessert on a Wednesday night, or any other occasion where you can offer up a little gift of shortbread. We will be here baking.
One thing will remain true – no matter what happens –
Sable Shortbread is and always will be the
“Real Canadian Shortbread™”
