Moving our bakery to a new location was no piece of cake. In fact, it was a monumental task, filled with unexpected challenges and a mix of excitement and trepidation. And we didn’t ask to move. So, as we mark the first anniversary of the big move, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the wild ride we’ve been on, the obstacles we’ve faced, and the delightful outcomes we’ve enjoyed.

The Challenges
Relocating a bakery under last year’s circumstances was no piece of cake. And prior to the move we had many unfortunate encounters over misplaced conceptions regarding right to access and received threats to disrupt our operations while they were still ongoing. To get here, we had to make sure that our baking equipment, ingredients, and furniture were transported safely and efficiently. Coordinating with tradespeople, moving equipment, and trying to create minimal disruption to our operations were uppermost. And doing all this while Duncan was recovering from major surgery was an enormous challenge.
Adjusting to a New Environment
Adjusting to a new location involves more than a change of scenery. It means acclimating to a new neighbourhood and becoming part of the community. To adjust, we had to adapt to new routes to work (that five minute walk is tough!) and designing a new bakery layout. But hey, we also get to explore new lunch spots!
Building Customer Relationships
Our customer relationships were important for us and we knew that moving was going to inconvenience many loyal customers. So we invested time in informing customers about the move and assuring them that we would continue to make delectable baked goods. The new location meant the opportunity to meet new customers but it would also require marketing and community engagement. Plus, we hoped that once the ovens were turned on we asked, who would be able to resist the aroma of freshly baked cookies?
Technological Setbacks
Setting up the IT in the new location was next. We faced technological setbacks during the transition, from ensuring stable internet connectivity to configuring our point-of-sale systems. With patience and a bit of ingenuity these too were overcome.
Building Out and Passing Licensing Inspections
Building out the new bakery space and meeting regulatory requirements was rigorous. From installing ovens to designing a layout that complies with health and safety standards, the process was time consuming. Passing licensing inspections involved a fair bit plastering and painting, replacing flooring, and hiring tradespeople. All that was followed by multiple visits from health inspectors and building inspectors. But, like a perfectly executed soufflé, the end result was worth it.

Cost
The financial implications of moving a business are significant. From the expenses of the physical move to the costs of outfitting the new space, the financial burden was substantial. Additionally, there were unforeseen expenses that cropped up during the transition. Budgeting carefully and managing costs effectively were paramount. We still have some outstanding bills to pay and more renovations to do, so having our loyal and enthusiastic customers on our side makes a huge difference as we navigate ways to pay these expenses.
