Sable Shortbread Celebrates San Giuseppe

Windsor, NS – March 17, 2025 – Sable Shortbread is pleased to share its Italian Canadian heritage for the feast of San Giuseppe on March 19, a feast celebrated annually in Italy and Italian communities around the world.

A particular feature of the celebration is Zeppole di San Giuseppe, an Italian pastry, and Sable Shortbread will be offering zeppole for one day only, on March 19, at its bakery in Windsor, NS.  This traditional pastry features a choux pastry donut filled with pastry cream and topped with a cherry.  They will be offering a Nova Scotia inspired flavour as well, filled with blueberry infused whipped cream.

Another tradition is the laying of the St. Joseph’s Day table where food is collected for the homeless and hungry.  Sable Shortbread will be collecting food donations for the food bank from St. Joseph Day until the end of March.  Food donations can be dropped off during regular hours and will be delivered to the food bank.

Founder Lorraine Pike commented, “My grandfather landed in Halifax at Pier 21 in 1905 and we have always celebrated the food and traditions of his homeland.  He was proud to make his home in Canada, but did not forget to teach us to remember our heritage as well.  Today members of our family can be found from coast to coast, and we will always be united by our shared culinary traditions.”

Sable Shortbread was founded in 2014 by mother and daughter team, Lorraine and Julia Pike, to create employment for Julia, a person with barriers to employment.  Duncan, Julia’s brother, joined the business full time in 2018.

Duncan commented, “Sable Shortbread makes Canadian Shortbread and once a year, Italian Zeppole.  We love that our heritage combines the art of Italian food with the skills and techniques of such a classic cookie as shortbread.  Our combined Irish and Italian heritage lead to good food, good friends and good times.  Slainte.”

Visit Sable Shortbread on March 19 to take part in the celebration.

Grand Opening of Sable Shortbread

KENTVILLE, NS – March 2, 2020 – Sable Shortbread Company Ltd. (“Sable Shortbread”) is pleased to announce that Sandra Snow, Mayor of Kentville, will cut the ribbon at the grand opening celebration (the “Grand Opening”) of Sable Shortbread and that Kentville Town Crier will be present to announce the Grand Opening.

The ceremonial ribbon cutting for the Grand Opening will take place at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the store’s location in Kentville, Nova Scotia.   Sable Shortbread is hosting a variety of events for its Grand Opening including a VIP invitation only event the evening before the ribbon cutting, swag bags for the first 25 customers on Grand Opening day, and more prizes and giveaways throughout the day.

Owners Lorraine Pike and her son and daughter, Duncan and Julia, are very pleased to hold this event to mark this special occasion of their first bricks and mortar store.  Lorraine and Julia started the business in Vancouver, BC in 2014 and Duncan joined the business full time in 2018, as the family had decided it was time to grow the business.  In late 2018 they decided to join family members on the East Coast and Sable Shortbread moved its operation from BC to Nova Scotia in 2019.  Since opening the store in Kentville, Sable Shortbread has been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and support it has received from the business community, elected officials and most of all, the community at large, who are supporting the business wholeheartedly.  They want to express their thanks to all who have helped them get to this stage and invite everyone to join them all throughout March for their Grand Opening month.

The ribbon cutting will take place at 10 am on March 7.  Details of all Sable Shortbread’s Grand Opening events can be found on Sable Shortbread’s website at www.sableshortbread.ca
